MM-017, sometimes referred to as the “Shadow Stealer”, is a subspecies of MM-002 which has advanced its camouflaging abilities to warp reality and essentially become a living shadow as a result of HT-132, a continuation of the HT-127 experiment. Containing MM-017 is significantly easier than the prior experiment, MM-014, as they are unable to traverse through solid materials to disguise themselves.

When camouflaging, they attach themselves to an object and pretend to be its shadow, perfectly replicating the object’s movement near identically to a real shadow, with one major difference in that they, rather than pointing away from the light source “casting” them, point towards it. It is theorized that this is because in this form they are unable to see and therefore simply stay on the side they attached from, though this has not been confirmed.

MM-017, when provided with prey inside their enclosure, demonstrated that this ability is used to hunt, as they hid in their prey’s shadow before suddenly revealing themselves and slicing off the head of their prey. MM-017 have proven near completely intangible when camouflaged, though this also means that they have to make themselves vulnerable shortly before they can attack.

MM-017, when not camouflaged, has a vaguely avian appearance, with feathered wings, sharp talons, and a flexible, bifurcated “beak” full of razor sharp blades suited to tearing off large chunks of prey at once. They are not very agile in this form, and lack physical strength. Additionally, due to their unique way of camouflage, it is not silent, making an audible shuffling noise as they shift into place.

Their talons, when disguised, allow them to cling to an object impressively well despite their weakness, and their large wings allow them to replicate the shape of large objects. Their bifurcated beak proves especially effective in slicing off limbs, or, optimally, heads.

Extermination Crew Procedures

MM-017 are subtle in their hunting, almost entirely silent while disguised. Though they cannot be heard, their camouflage is not perfect. While in areas in which they may be, it is recommended to keep an eye on your and your allies’ shadows, so that they cannot catch you off-guard.

If an MM-014 is not perceived as it stalks its prey, it will instantly kill it with a spike through the heart. Due to this fact, keeping a close eye on your and your allies’ backs is recommended.

MM-017 cannot be harmed while they are camouflaged, so if one has attached to you, you should stay close to either your teammates or a trap, so that you have time to react when it attacks.

MM-017 can be unpredictable in how long they will take to attack, but they make a distinct shuffling noise when shifting into their natural form to attack, giving a chance to react and get to a trap or ally.
